The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ has an exciting career opportunity for several full-time Grain Inspectors in the Division of Commodity Services. The successful candidates will inspect and officially certify grain product quality in accordance with USDA Standards of Grain for producers, shippers, processors, buyers, marketers, and other parties with a financial interest in the grain industry. Additional duties include performing sampling, weighing, stowage examination, grading and certification of domestic and export grain at export facilities in and around the Hampton Roads area with occasional work anywhere in Virginia.

Scheduling: The Grain Program normally operates various shifts throughout the day/evening & during peak workloads can operate 24/7. Successful candidate must have the ability & flexibility to work varied hours & be able to adapt to changing work schedules with limited advanced notice. The position is designated as essential to agency operations during emergencies & employees are required to work during authorized closings such as during inclement weather (i.e. snow & ice storms, etc).

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of agriculture, farming or related field is desirable but not required as training is provided. The demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (oral & written) with a diverse clientele, work harmoniously with others, perform basic mathematical calculations and follow instructions is needed as is the demonstrated ability to read, interpret, apply and explain complex rules & regulations; work independently; and be analytical. H.S. Diploma/GED required.

Physical Demands: Position is physically demanding and requires long periods of standing, walking, climbing/descending of up to 50 feet, reaching, and frequent bending/stooping. Inspections & grading functions involve visual & olfactory analysis, and therefore require a verifiable ability to distinguish colors and odors. Gain dust may impact allergic conditions.

Conditions of Employment: Successful applicants will be required to maintain a valid driver’s license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for safety. Final candidates must meet the required qualifications to fully acquire a USDA/FGIS license for sampler, stowage examinations, weigher, protein & oil testing, & mycotoxin testing within 45 days of hire; licensure qualifications to grade corn & soybeans within 8 months of hire; licensure qualifications to grade wheat & mixed grains within 24 months of hire; and other licenses as needed to meet service demands. Final candidates must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Coursework/training in agriculture or related science is preferred along with knowledge of federal regulations for grain grading (training is provided for those without this knowledge) and experience in agricultural commodities or farming, specifically in grain production. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
