Community Colleges of Spokane is accepting applications to develop an applicant pool of qualified candidates for a part-time, non-permanent Food Service Worker. This announcement is to develop an applicant pool of qualified candidates for future part-time; non-permanent Food Service positions located at various District Head Start/ Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program/Early Head Start (HS/ECEAP/EHS) sites.

Food Service Workers are responsible for assisting the cook in performing a variety of duties in the preparation and serving of food and in maintaining sanitary conditions in a Head Start/Early Head Start kitchen.

Assist in cooking and preparing foods according to the menu under the direction of the cook. *
Prepare classroom carts; serve meals and snacks. *
Assure that meals and snacks are served according to schedule. *
Operate cooking and kitchen equipment; clean kitchen and equipment; maintain safety and sanitation in the kitchen and classroom. *
Maintain daily refrigeration temperature logs and other temperature logs as necessary and assist with inventory of supplies and goods for assigned meals. *
May attend program meetings with staff and/or parents as work schedule permits.
Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

This position is designated a bargaining unit position and union membership is no longer a condition of employment.


Has knowledge of food preparation principles.
Has knowledge of and applies sanitation and safety procedures.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety and sanitation procedures.
Knowledge of nutrition standards and food substitutions.
Basic math skills needed to calculate measurement conversions, order supplies and adjust recipe size.
Good communication skills both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively individually and as a member of a team.
Ability to manage time to meet deadlines with minimal direction.
Positive interpersonal skills to be able to work with children and adults.
Ability to maintain confidential information with parents, staff, and volunteers.
Possession of, or eligible for, a food handler's permit.
Requires First Aid/CPR (as offered through CCS).
Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.
The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (Desirable Qualifications)
Previous experience with early childhood education.
Previous experience with Head Start, ECEAP, Early Head Start or a low-income population.


Work is active in nature.
Move up to 25 lbs occasionally.
Occasional kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation.
Occasional to frequent change in position from sedentary, standing, stooping and walking.
Requires communication ability necessary to understand instructions and recognize hazardous, unsafe or poisonous materials and/or products.
Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, odors and/or biohazards.
Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Position is eligible for paid sick leave benefit with an accrual rate of one hour for every 40 hours worked. Part time hourly jobs are not intended to exceed 1050 hours of work within any 12 month period from the original date of hire. If a part time job exceeds 1050 hours an employee has a right per WAC 357-19-450 to petition for remedial action within thirty days of exceeding the 1050 limit.

This position is an at-will employment position where the employer can terminate employment at any time for any reason (other than illegal reasons) and the employee can resign his or her employment at any time, for any reason.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the District to sponsor an H1-B visa. In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment. Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
Cyclic schedule (less than 12-months/40-hours a week).
This position is overtime eligible.
6-month probationary period; may be extended up to 12 months.
Post-Offer medical exam which includes tuberculin screening and submission of documentation indicating Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccination or immunity.
Possession of Washington State Department of Health: Food Workers Card.
Criminal history/child abuse information check including Department of Children, Youth and Families Portable Background Check prior to employment.
First aid/CPR (as available through CCS).
Requires local or regional travel. If using personal vehicle proof of driver's license and car insurance required.
Due to the amount of applications received, applications are kept on file for only four months. This position will be designated a bargaining unit position after a part time employee works 350 hours or more in any consecutive twelve month period.
